The Visitor tells the story of an American professor who travels to New York for a conference and finds his apartment occupied by a young couple, illegal immigrants who thought they were renting it on the up-and-up. The professor, a recent widower, becomes involved with these people and allows his life to be enlarged by them. Lead actor Richard Jenkins was nominated for an Oscar for his performance; the film garnered 10 awards, was nominated for 11 more, and was popular with both critics and the public (91% each on Rottentomatoes.com, and 7.9 / 10 on IMDB).
Rene Rodriguez, Miami Herald:
“The Visitor is a small movie, but its emotions could not be writ any larger.”
J. R. Jones, Chicago Reader:
“Richard Jenkins gets the role of a lifetime in this powerful second film by writer-director Thomas McCarthy.”
Jeanne Kaplan, Kaplan s. Kaplan:
“This is one of those surprising little gems that make you happy to be an ardent moviegoer.”
